Protecting Mothers and Babies: How PMTCT Prevents Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV
With early antenatal care, consistent antiretroviral treatment, and supportive mentor mothers, women living with HIV can give birth to healthy, HIV-free babies.
One of the core constitutional objectives of Positive Impact and Wellness Initiative (PIWI) is paying special attention to the challenges faced by women living with HIV/AIDS—especially preventing HIV from passing from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.
Key Pillars of Effective PMTCT Support
- Early and confidential antenatal HIV screening and immediate linkage to maternal ART.
- Stigma-free maternity care where expectant mothers feel safe attending every clinic appointment.
- Peer support from Mentor Mothers who share lived experience and practical encouragement.
- Postnatal prophylaxis and timely Early Infant Diagnosis (EID) testing for newborns.
